If you’re anything like me, the past few weeks have been filled with SO much Netflix watching. So much that it’s starting to feel like I’ve seen everything the website has to offer. Stranger Things? Yup, watched it. Tiger King? Finished it in a day. Kingdom? Twice (and counting).
So what do you do when it feels like you’re out of things to watch?
I’m here to help.
I started looking for Chinese TV shows about a year ago. Originally it was to improve my listening comprehension. I quickly realized that websites like Netflix and Youtube are full of hidden gems.
If you’re looking for entertainment to treat the stay-at-home blues, stick around! Here are my top five favorite Chinese Dramas that can be easily accessed online. No previous Chinese experience necessary!

1 METEOR GARDEN (2018)
Where to watch it: Netflix
What it’s about: Shancai is determined to do well at her dream university, but she clashes with a clique of students. They're rich, famous, and rule the school-- including the most stuck-up of them all, Dao Ming Si.
Meteor Garden is my first love when it comes to Chinese television. Its 50-episode run is full of drama and romance. Get ready for love triangles, meddling families, and lots of food being thrown in faces. Sometimes with slow-motion replays!

2 A LITTLE REUNION
Where to watch it: Youtube
What it’s about: This show is about the lives of 3 teenagers and their families as they prepare to take China’s infamous university entrance exam.
This show’s all-Chinese titles might come off as a little intimidating, but never fear! Every episode is subtitled in English. I love this show, because it's not just about the teenagers and their school lives. It's also about the equally dramatic lives of their parents!

3 A LOVE SO BEAUTIFUL
Where to watch it: Netflix
What it’s about: Chen Xiaoxi is a high schooler who isn’t shy about her crush on her classmate, Jiang Chen. However, he is indifferent and cold to her because of a tragic past. Can she win his affections, or will her heart be broken?
In my opinion, this is one of the most famous Chinese TV shows for a non-Chinese speaking audience. This show tugs on the heartstrings. It has you rooting for their relationship every episode.

4 LEGEND OF FUYAO
Where to watch it: Youtube or Amazon Prime
What it’s about: Fu Yao is an orphan who’d worked as a slave since she was young. She is compelled by a series of tragic events to travel the 5 Kingdoms in order to lift a curse put on her at birth.
If you’re interested in period dramas, this one is for you! It doesn’t have quite the zombie-rific excitement of the Korean show Kingdom, but it does have action, romance, and mystery. It also has beautiful costumes and scenery. Altogether, this show is worth a watch!

5 ASHES OF LOVE
Where to watch it: Netflix
What it’s about: Jinmi, the young daughter of the Floral Goddess, is hidden away to prevent her from falling in love. Despite her best efforts, she falls for Xufeng, who is the son of the Heavenly Emperor. Is their love doomed?
Ashes of Love is a fantasy drama that is truly binge-worthy. The costumes are beautiful and the drama is never-ending-- what more could you ask for?!
