This year’s Met Gala theme was Camp. Camp is an ode to Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay, “Notes on Camp”. It is a combination of the flamboyant and the dramatic.
The guest list for the Gala is determined by Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue. Making Wintour's guest list is no easy feat. She won't choose celebs that don't capture the theme, won't receive attention, and aren't recognizable.
Some celebs such as Lady Gaga, Cardi B, and Billy Porter embraced this year’s theme to the max:
Lady Gaga came in with a huge, hot pink gown, which she suddenly stripped off to reveal outfit after outfit (in a true nesting doll style). Cardi B wore a feathery and thick burgundy dress complete with men to carry the train. Billy Porter was decked in gold and entered with shirtless men carrying him onto the red carpet.
Obviously, there were many Asian celebs who made Wintour’s picky A-list! Let’s see how they embraced Camp!
-
1 Lay Zhang
Dressed in Valentino, Lay (Zhang YiXing) appeared at the Met Gala for his first time! If you look closely, his jacket has a UFO flying over the edge.
Lay is a Chinese singer/dancer, but he is part of kpop boyband EXO.

2 Crazy Rich Asians Cast
Make way for the Crazy Rich Asians cast!
Constance Wu’s sheer, glittery dress by Marchesa was accentuated with silver accessories to capture the theme of Camp.Henry Golding dressed in a blue-purple ombre, flashy Versace suit.

3 Crazy Rich Asians Cast
This year, Awkwafina (left) showed up in a gold, frilly, and shiny dress from Joseph Altuzarra.
Gemma Chan (right) stepped onto the red (technically pink) carpet wearing Tom Ford and a crystal headdress. This dress and headdress were actually inspired by Liz Taylor’s movie “Boom!”.
How do you think they embraced camp?

4 Lana Condor
Lana Condor’s gorgeous pink, fairy-like tulle dress was designed by Giambattista Valli. It was so puffy that she lost her phone in the dress and Charles Melton had to find it using a phone flashlight.
She plays a Korean-American in “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before”, but she’s actually Vietnamese!

5 Wendy Yu
Another ombre outfit! Wendy Yu’s beautiful white to blue gown was also designed by Giambattista Valli (he seems to have a speciality in tulle gowns). She accessorized with an ombre clutch with her name on it as well.
Yu is a fashion investor, and was the first Asian investor to invest in Vogue.

6 Liu Wen
Liu Wen was dressed in a plaid and fringed dress by Thom Browne. Wen is a Chinese supermodel, and was the first Chinese model to appear on American Vogue.
