Marvel Studios announced details for their upcoming movie “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” at San Diego Comic Con on Saturday. “Shang-Chi” will be the first superhero movie with an Asian lead. It is slated to come out on February 12, 2021. While that may seem like a long time away, here is everything we know about the project so far.
Simu Liu has been cast in the title role. The Harbin-born, Chinese-Canadian actor is best known for his role in the Canadian TV show “Blood and Water,” and can also be seen in “Orphan Black,” “The Expanse,” and “Fresh Off the Boat.” Liu had previously campaigned for the role on Twitter as far back as 2014.
Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians, The Farewell) has also been cast in an undisclosed role. Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai (In the Mood For Love, Chungking Express) will take on the role of the Mandarin. Destin Daniel Cretton (Short Term 12) is set to direct.

Shang-Chi first appeared in the comic book “Special Marvel Edition #15” in 1973. The character was born in China to the head of a criminal organization. He was raised to become a master of many types of martial arts as well as mental disciplines. When he learned of his father’s wrongdoings, Shang-Chi devoted himself to bringing down his father’s crime syndicate. Marvel’s website describes Shang-Chi as “a martial arts master without a peer in the world” and a “natural athlete as well as peace-loving and composed.”
