There’s milk and cereal, macaroni and cheese, Tom and Jerry, and most importantly, mother and father. We have already celebrated our mothers this May and now June 20 is here to celebrate the father figures in our lives.
Here are the five phrases you must know that will definitely put a smile on their faces.
-
1 爸爸, 父亲节快乐 (Bà ba fù qīn jié kuài lè)
On this special Sunday, you will want to say this phrase. It means “Dad, Happy Father’s Day.” 爸爸 (bà ba) is a casual and common way of saying dad in Chinese. 父亲 (fù qīn) means father and 节 (jié) is referring to a holiday. Lastly, 快乐 (kuài lè) is happy.
So, what are you waiting for? Give them a call and say it. There are no excuses!
-
2 爸爸, 谢谢您 (Bà ba xiè xiè nín)
There is no better time to say a big old “thank you” to your dad than Father’s Day. The reason why you would want to say 谢谢您 (xiè xiè nín) instead of 谢谢你 (xiè xiè nǐ) is because 您 (nín) shows respect. This can be seen by the heart character 心 (xīn) in 您.
This “thank you” will be coming from the bottom of your heart.
-
3 爸爸, 我爱你 (Bà ba wǒ ài nǐ)
It has always been taboo in Chinese culture to say “I love you” to parents. In fact in many Chinese households, you may rarely hear the phrase “我爱你”.
Nevertheless, it doesn’t mean parents don’t love their children. They show it in different and unique ways.
We need to start breaking this taboo and start verbalizing our love for our parents. They will really appreciate it and we will be happy too. It is a win-win situation!

4 爸爸, 您幸苦了 (Bà ba nín xīn kǔ le)
“Dad, you’ve worked hard,” is the perfect way of saying “I love you” and “thank you” at the same time. This phrase is especially great if you know your father is not comfortable hearing “我爱你.”
Our fathers sacrifice their time and work hard to provide the best for us. This phrase is thoughtful and it acknowledges their effort, hard work, and sacrifices.

5 爸爸, 你太棒了!(Bà ba nǐ tài bàng le)
Remember when you were little and your dad was your hero? This is the perfect phrase to show admiration and encouragement because it means “Dad, you are awesome.”
It is very casual and more like slang. In modern Chinese, 棒 (bàng) means awesome. And who doesn’t like to be admired and appreciated?
You can definitely use this phrase for anyone in your everyday life.
